$24 Million Locks Jamal Shead in Toronto Through 2029-30

The $8 million average annual value lands just two seasons after Shead went No. 45 in the 2024 NBA draft out of Houston. Agent KJ Smith told ESPN's Shams Charania the parties had agreed. In 2025-26 Shead posted 354 assists off the bench, a league-best mark and the most in franchise history for a reserve, while playing all 82 regular-season games.

Jamal Shead agreed to a three-year, $24 million contract extension with the Toronto Raptors on Thursday, a deal that keeps the backup point guard under contract through the 2029-30 season.

Toronto already exercised his team option for the 2026-27 season at $2,296,271 in June. That option year still sits on the books. The new deal stretches three seasons past it and moves a second-round pick to about $8 million a year before restricted free agency ever arrives. His original rookie deal was a three-year, $6.11 million second-round contract. At that rate, the extension pays roughly 3.5 times the $2.3 million option salary and close to four times the rookie deal's yearly average.

The basketball case sits in how the Raptors use a pass-first guard behind Immanuel Quickley. Shead averaged 6.6 points, 5.4 assists, and 1.7 rebounds in 22.6 minutes across those 82 games, with 12 starts. Seventy of them came off the bench, where he averaged 5.8 points and 5.1 assists in 21.0 minutes and piled up the 354 assists, per Basketball-Reference. He is a second-unit creator who keeps the ball moving when Quickley sits. Hoops Rumors described the 6-foot-1 guard as "a solid point-of-attack defender on the perimeter." The assist volume and availability are why a No. 45 pick gets paid $8 million a year before his third season even starts.

The playoff run added to the case. Shead averaged 9 points, 5 assists, and 1.4 steals in seven postseason games, four of them starts, while Quickley dealt with injury. Hoops Rumors had him at 32.0 minutes per game in that expanded role. When the starter went down, Toronto already had a reserve who knew the reads. Across his first two seasons he appeared in 157 games, averaging 6.9 points, 4.8 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 21.1 minutes.

Put the number next to the rest of the sheet. Kawhi Leonard already agreed to a two-year, $115 million extension with a 2028-29 player option. Quickley runs the starting group. Shead runs the second unit when the starters rest. An $8 million average for that job is a modest line beside a near-max wing and a starting point guard the franchise has already invested in.

The next step is on the calendar. The 2026-27 season stays at the $2.3 million option salary, the new money starts in 2027-28, and the extension takes Shead off next summer's restricted free agent market.
