Brandon Ingram's Partial Achilles Keeps Him Out of Oct. 21

Clippers media day reveals the Kawhi trade centerpiece is recovering from a partial Achilles tear found in May heel surgery and will miss the opener vs. Sacramento.

Brandon Ingram will miss the Clippers' Oct. 21 opener against Sacramento after Trent Redden told media day that a partially torn Achilles, discovered during May heel surgery, still has him short of ready.

The hard clock is opening night. Redden said the partial tear needs about six fewer months of rehab than a full rupture would, and that Los Angeles will reevaluate Ingram when the season starts instead of pinning a return date now.

That is the possession Los Angeles bought when it sent Kawhi Leonard to Toronto for Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected firsts in 2031 and 2033, and pick swaps. Ingram averaged 21.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.7 assists last season on 47.7 percent from the field and 38.2 percent from three. He is a two-time All-Star at 29. The Clippers built the post-Leonard offense around that three-level wing next to Darius Garland. Without him on Oct. 21, the first help possession looks different. Garland still bends the ball screen. The second action that used to find Ingram on the weak-side wing or in the elbow now has to land on Dick, Rui Hachimura, or a 19-year-old No. 5 pick in Keaton Wagler. That is a different closeout map than the one the front office drew when the trade finally cleared on Sept. 14.

The injury file is older than the Clippers jersey. Redden said doctors found the partial Achilles tear before the trade, during the same May procedure that repaired Ingram's heel. Ingram said he had been dealing with pain "throughout the year with the Raptors, especially coming down crunch time," did not know what it was at first, and chose surgery near the end of the season. He was walking at media day with no visible limp. Walking and opening a season on a healed Achilles are different jobs.

The depth chart around him is already thin for other reasons. Jordan Miller and Yanic Konan Niederhauser are both rehabbing. Camp opens without the trade centerpiece, and two of the young pieces are not ready either. Early scoring and spacing land on Garland, Hachimura (on a two-year, $28 million deal), Max Strus, Derrick Jones Jr., and whoever wins the Wagler/Dick minutes before Ingram clears.

The tape that earned Ingram the trade return was the midrange step-back and the catch-and-shoot three that punished a help defender for leaving early. Last season he took that 38.2 percent clip on enough volume to keep the strong-side dig honest. When he is out, defenses can load the paint on Garland's pick-and-roll and dare Dick or Wagler to punish from the corner at the same rate. Until Redden's reevaluation hits, Lue has to script second-side creation for players who have not yet shared a regular-season possession in Clippers uniforms.

Watch what that does to the first three weeks of the regular season. Los Angeles already surrendered five consecutive first-round picks from 2029 through 2033 and a $30 million fine in the Leonard investigation. The draft cushion is gone. The star cushion was supposed to be Ingram's 21.5-point wing creation. Every night he sits, the Clippers are asking a rebuilt supporting cast to invent offense while Ty Lue installs a new identity after the Kawhi era. The reevaluation Redden promised is the next hard date on the calendar.
