The Charlotte Hornets ruled Coby White out of all four preseason games Monday after he strained his left calf in training camp.

White is the starting point guard Charlotte paid three years and $74 million to replace LaMelo Ball, and the team gave no timeline for the Oct. 21 opener in Brooklyn, saying only that updates will come "as appropriate."

White has been managing calf trouble for about 14 months. He strained his right calf in August 2025 while still with Chicago, sat out the Bulls' whole preseason and missed the start of that regular season. Charlotte traded for him at the February deadline and kept managing the calf through the All-Star break. Later left-calf sitouts followed, including in March, and he was still listed with a calf issue on the injury report in mid-April. Now the left one again, in camp, 16 days before a game counts.

Calf strains fool people. A guard can jog, shoot and look normal in individual work, and the problem only shows up when practice gets live. Bulls coach Billy Donovan explained it last October, when White's comeback stalled. The trouble, he said, came from "those stops, starts, quick explosiveness" once Chicago scrimmaged at full speed. That is White's game. At 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds he creates space with his first two steps. A calf that grabs on the plant takes that explosiveness away.

The role makes the timing worse. Last spring White came off the bench behind Ball and gave Charlotte a jolt, averaging 15.6 points in 21 games on 39% from three in under 20 minutes a night. He hit the turnaround three with 10.8 seconds left that forced overtime in the 127-126 play-in win over Miami and finished that night with 19 points on 5-of-8 from deep. Ball is in Minnesota now. The new deal pays for a starter's load, closer to the 29.1 minutes a night White was playing in Chicago before the trade, and coach Charles Lee was expected to open camp with White, Kon Knueppel, Brandon Miller, Naz Reid and Moussa Diabaté as his first five.

Pull White out and the ball lands with Miller and Knueppel, two wings who can make the next pass but have spent their careers finishing plays more than starting them. Rookie Christian Anderson, one of Charlotte's two first-round picks in June, figures to get the first look at running the offense while White sits. That is a desk read of the roster, not a Lee announcement. Four exhibitions against Brooklyn on Tuesday, Milwaukee on Oct. 11, Boston on Oct. 14 and Memphis on Oct. 16 now double as his audition. Pick-and-roll timing with Reid and Diabaté gets built in those games, and White will miss every one of them.

The number to track is the first re-check date. Last fall in Chicago, White missed the entire preseason and the start of the regular season while re-evaluations kept slipping. Charlotte has not put any date on this one. The schedule out of the gate does the Hornets no favors either. After Brooklyn, they host Atlanta on Oct. 23 and Miami on Oct. 24, a back-to-back that gets harder to plan around with a fresh calf strain.

If Charlotte names a re-evaluation date before the Memphis game on Oct. 16, that date decides whether White plays in Brooklyn. If the team stays quiet past the preseason finale, the opening-night point guard question shifts to Anderson and Miller.
