Fenerbahçe Tarfin officially signed Dwight Powell on Friday, a contract that runs through the end of the 2026-27 season, 11 days after the Dallas Mavericks waived him. The 35-year-old center played 763 of his 768 NBA regular-season games in Dallas, and he leaves as the fourth-best career field goal shooter in Mavericks history at .606, per the team.
Dallas ran out of roster spots, not uses
Powell re-signed with Dallas on Sept. 25 on a one-year minimum deal that was partially guaranteed for $1 million, per Dallas Sports Journal. He was the only one of the Mavericks' 16 players on standard contracts without a fully guaranteed salary. Keeping him meant trading or cutting someone who was guaranteed, and the team waived him on Oct. 19 instead.
The Mavericks' release that morning listed him fifth in franchise games played, sixth in offensive rebounds (1,187) and total rebounds (3,251), and 10th in blocks (330).
He arrived in Dallas as the second piece in the Rajon Rondo trade in December 2014, per AP.
The game that travels
Across 12 seasons, Powell took 429 threes in 768 games, by our count from his Basketball-Reference totals. That is barely more than one every two games. He made his living in the paint instead: a .657 career mark on twos and a .666 true shooting percentage, per Basketball-Reference.
In 2021-22 he played all 82 games and started 71. In 2022-23 he shot .732 from the field in 76 games.
In 2025-26 he attempted 112 free throws and 101 field goals in 63 games, by our count from Basketball-Reference.
His offensive rebound rate was 11.3% last season and has landed between 9.5% and 12.7% in each of the last five seasons, per Basketball-Reference.
His assist rate has sat above 9% in each of the last three seasons, up from 6.9% in 2022-23, per Basketball-Reference, and in three preseason games this month he averaged 3.7 assists in 12.1 minutes, per the Mavericks.
What changes in Istanbul
The minutes had been shrinking. Powell logged 1,798 minutes in 2021-22, then 1,458, 836, 551 and 904 over the next four seasons, per Basketball-Reference. He averaged 14.3 minutes a night last season as a reserve.
The club's statement credits his ability to play both power forward and center, per Anadolu Agency. The Mavericks list him at 6-10 and 260 pounds.
He averaged 2.1 fouls in 14.3 minutes a game last season, per Basketball-Reference. Under FIBA rules, a game is 40 minutes and a player fouls out at five fouls, not six.
