How Dawson Battie's No. 34 Resets Nebraska Recruiting
The St. Mark's (Texas) power forward, ranked No. 34 in the SC Next 100 and No. 7 at his position, becomes only the second top-35 commit to Lincoln since ESPN's recruiting database opened in 2007, after Bryce McGowens sat at No. 26 in the 2021 class.

Dawson Battie told ESPN on Monday that he is a Nebraska Cornhusker.
That ranking math is the whole reset. Nebraska has spent years selling Sweet 16 runs, packed Pinnacle Bank Arena nights, and Fred Hoiberg's positionless offense to kids who still had Kentucky, Stanford, and the rest of Texas on the board. Battie kept Stanford alive after a summer visit, then flew into Lincoln this past weekend for the official that closed it. He called the fanbase the best he has felt and said Hoiberg does not need to yell to run practice. Assistant Ernie Zeigler had been on him since freshman year. Consistency beat the louder brands.
The tape fits what Hoiberg already wants on the floor. Battie is listed around 6-foot-8, a strong forward who creates mismatches with his back to the basket, finishes on straight-line drives, and flashes into open paint spots without forcing the bounce. ESPN's scouting notes stress frontcourt length and switchable positioning more than highlight-reel flash. Rebounding is there and still has room to grow. Passing shows up as a quiet tool. Those are the habits that survive Big Ten physicality when the first option is taken away.
Family basketball sits under the ranking. His parents both played college ball. Older brother Dillon is at Wichita State. Uncle Tony Battie logged 14 NBA seasons across six franchises and gave him the line he still quotes: 90 percent of the game happens when the ball is not in your hands. A No. 34 who already talks about the other 90 percent is the kind of piece a program uses to recruit the next one. Battie is Hoiberg's second 2027 pickup after three-star forward Tyler Schlagel. The class now has a top-40 name that other top-40 names can point at when Lincoln calls.
Campus-to-commit stories go thin when they only say "he picked a school." This one has a watched path. Dallas prep. Long Zeigler relationship. Summer Stanford stop. Weekend official in Lincoln. Verbal on Monday with No. 34 next to the name. Signing day is still ahead in November. Until then, the board already changed: Nebraska is no longer asking top-35 kids to be the first of their kind in nearly two decades. McGowens was the last. Battie is the next. That is the pitch that lands after the visit photos stop circulating.
