Matt Painter Agrees to Purdue Extension Through 2030-31, 12 Wins From Passing Gene Keady
Purdue's amended deal with Painter runs through 2030-31, pending full Board of Trustees approval. He is 501-224, 12 wins from passing Keady, with a roster that returns 21% of its starts.

Purdue announced Tuesday that Matt Painter's amended contract now runs through the 2030-31 season, pending full approval by the school's Board of Trustees. Jon Rothstein reported the extension on X before the school posted its release. The deal adds a raise in annual pay plus retention and performance bonus upgrades, with the dollar figures due after the next trustees meeting.
Purdue extended Painter before he passes Keady and before a roster returning 21.0% of its starts plays a game. Painter sits at 501-224 entering his 22nd season, second in school history behind Gene Keady's 512-270, and by our count he needs 11 wins to tie and 12 to pass. The Boilermakers open the season outside the AP Top 25.
Why extend now, with this roster
Painter's last March was real: 30-9 last season, a Big Ten Tournament title and an Elite Eight that ended against No. 1 Arizona on March 28. The players who drove it are gone. Braden Smith went No. 38 in the draft, and Trey Kaufman-Renn was a second-round pick by Minnesota. Purdue's own game notes put the returning share at 41 starts and 34.6% of last season's scoring.
That's why the AP voters slid Purdue to third among "others receiving votes," ending a 79-week ranked streak. Purdue's administration looked at the same roster and gave its coach five more seasons anyway.
The rebuild record is the case
Purdue's notes answer the obvious worry. The previous five times under Painter that the Boilermakers brought back less than 40% of their starters, they went 118-55 combined, which by our count is a .682 winning percentage. The last two of those teams, in 2019 and 2023, won the Big Ten regular season.
The 2022-23 group is the clearest comparison. It was the last Purdue team to start the season unranked, and it climbed to No. 1 five weeks later. Turnover hasn't knocked this program off its floor.
The longer résumé points the same way. Purdue has made 11 straight NCAA Tournaments, the fourth-longest active streak in Division I. It is the only school to land a top-four seed in nine consecutive tournaments. Painter has 117 wins since the start of 2022-23, fourth nationally, and 492 over the last 20 seasons, sixth among all coaches. By our count the last three seasons alone produced 88 wins (34-5, 24-12 and 30-9), with a 2024 national title game against UConn in the middle.
What the deal doesn't fix
The March complaint follows Painter, and the extension does nothing to quiet it. He has 17 NCAA berths, nine Sweet 16s, three Elite Eights and one title game, a 75-60 loss to UConn. Five Big Ten regular-season titles and five Big Ten Coach of the Year awards sit beside zero national championships. Only Keady won more conference coaching awards, with seven.
Keady never won a title either. Passing him makes Painter the winningest coach in Purdue history, and it puts the program's standard squarely on him.
What to watch
Tonight at 7 p.m. ET, Purdue plays an exhibition at No. 4 UConn in Hartford that will not count toward the 501. CT Insider lists Purdue's probable starters as C.J. Cox, Omer Mayer, Gicarri Harris, Daniel Jacobsen and Caden Pierce, the Princeton transfer who averaged 11.9 points there and picked Purdue over UConn. Those four returners combined for 24.1 points a game last season by our count, plus one newcomer. The opener that does count is Gonzaga in Las Vegas.
The next Board of Trustees meeting is when the raise and bonus figures land. Purdue signed a 2026 class ranked No. 9 by 247Sports, led by Luke Ertel, Jacob Webber and Sinan Huan. Athletic director Tommy McClelland cited a 106-game Mackey Arena sellout streak in the release. Painter called Purdue "a very special place for me" and said he's "humbled that the Purdue administration continues to put their faith in me to lead this program."
