Texas junior guard Mikey Lewis fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in practice earlier this week and will have surgery on Thursday, the University of Texas confirmed.
Lewis, the Saint Mary's transfer who averaged 13.9 points last season, is expected to miss an extended period. The school says the injury is not expected to be season-ending.
The timing is the problem for a new transfer guard in September. Surgery on Thursday means Lewis loses the rest of fall camp reps and the early weeks of ball-screen timing next to Isaiah Johnson. The Longhorns open the regular season Nov. 2 against Chicago State at Moody Center. Whatever "extended" covers, it starts before that tip and eats the stretch when a rebuilt roster is supposed to learn each other.
Sean Miller brought Lewis in for a reason that shows up on the scoring sheet. At Saint Mary's in 2025-26 he started all 33 games, ranked second on the Gaels at 13.9 points, hit 36.8 percent from three on 185 attempts, and shot 88.2 percent from the line while earning first-team All-WCC. He posted a career-high 31 points with seven threes against No. 9 Gonzaga on Feb. 28. Across two seasons in Moraga he logged 68 games, 11.0 points per night, and a 37.1 percent career mark from deep. He also brings March experience. Saint Mary's went 27-6 last season, won the WCC regular-season title and reached the NCAA Tournament's Round of 64, a year after a run to the Round of 32.
Texas ranked No. 7 in Blue Ribbon's preseason top 25 with 11 newcomers. In a July roster breakdown, CBS Sports' Isaac Trotter projected Colorado transfer Isaiah Johnson and five-star freshman Austin Goosby as the starting backcourt, with Auburn transfer Elyjah Freeman sliding in as the starting wing. Trotter wrote that Lewis could push past Goosby to start at the 2 next to Johnson, or come in as the first guard off the bench. He also raised a counterpoint. Lewis shot just 48% on layups in the WCC, and Trotter questioned what that looks like in the SEC. The injury pushes that test back.
Pull Lewis out of the mix and the minutes do not vanish. They shift toward Tennessee transfer Amari Evans, whom Trotter called a defensive specialist, and freshman wing Bo Ogden. Freshman Joe Sterling, the closest thing to a movement shooter on the roster in Trotter's view, and Lithuanian freshman Mantas Laurencikas, a candidate for backup point guard, also stand to gain. None of them arrived in Austin with a first-team all-conference season behind him.
The portal clock still matters even when the injury is not season-ending. Lewis signed in late April with two years of eligibility left. Fall camp is when a transfer guard earns the trust to run Miller's actions without a second look, and this camp carries more of that work than most. Texas added 11 newcomers and returns one starter, junior center Matas Vokietaitis, per the school's Blue Ribbon release. Every practice Lewis misses is a rep that a new group spends learning each other without him.
The next checkpoint is Thursday's surgery. Beyond that, the school has given no timeline other than "extended," and the Nov. 2 opener against Chicago State at Moody Center is the first date on the calendar.
