No. 30 Recruit Taylor Brown Commits to South Carolina
The Long Island Lutheran point guard chose the Gamecocks over Tennessee and North Carolina and is South Carolina's first commitment in the 2027 class.
Taylor Brown committed to South Carolina on Saturday, giving Dawn Staley the first commitment in the Gamecocks' 2027 class, per On3's Chris Wellbaum.
Brown is the No. 30 overall recruit and No. 5 point guard in the 2027 SC Next 100, and she chose the Gamecocks over Tennessee and North Carolina after an official visit to Columbia in September, per ESPN. The staff has publicly acknowledged that the 2026-27 roster lacks a traditional point guard. Brown will be the only true point guard on the roster when she arrives for 2027-28, per ESPN.
The roster is big. South Carolina averages a little over 6-foot-2, per ESPN. For 2026-27, a committee of Tessa Johnson, Agot Makeer, Brooke Quarles Daniels, and incoming five-star freshman Jerzy Robinson is likely to share ball-handling and initiation duties. Brown is listed at 5-foot-6 by ESPN.
ESPN describes her as "a lead guard capable of playing in transition, handling pressure and competing alongside elite talent." Before her injury, she had begun to grow into the traditional true point guard mold, per ESPN, and had become a knockdown three-point shooter who creates floor spacing and forces tough closeout decisions. Her EYBL line for Exodus NYC last summer was 12.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.
The injury still sets the timeline. Brown has been rehabbing a knee injury sustained in February, and Wellbaum reports she has been sidelined since then by an unspecified ACL injury. She told Rivals the Gamecocks' recovery facilities mattered, "especially now with my ACL," along with the roster, culture, campus, and her comfort with the coaching staff. South Carolina offered in May. Brown visited Tennessee in June, visited Columbia the weekend of Sept. 18 with Jordyn Palmer and Jezelle Banks, and visited North Carolina the last weekend of September, per Wellbaum. She also visited Virginia Tech but dropped the Hokies. Staley, Lisa Boyer, and Jolette Law visited her on Sept. 30, while Tennessee and North Carolina were still her other finalists.
Brown played at Ursuline Academy in Delaware, earned first-team all-state, and helped win a state championship before transferring to Long Island Lutheran in Glen Head, New York. She described her game to Rivals, per On3's Talia Goodman: "I pride myself on defense, definitely." She added that she can "score at all three levels" and said, "I'm not a pass-first, but I want to get my teammates involved."
ESPN says Brown should have a "big opportunity" to fill a roster hole and contribute minutes in 2027-28. The 2026 class already includes Robinson and forwards Oliviyah Edwards, Kaeli Wynn, Kelsi Andrews, and Justin Loubens. South Carolina is chasing a fourth national title after back-to-back title-game losses to UConn and UCLA. Banks and Palmer remain on the 2027 board, and Wellbaum lists guard Ashley MacCalla and post Zaniya Johnson as still in play.
The rankings vary by service. Rivals has Brown 19th overall, 247Sports has her 24th, and ESPN has her 30th. Wellbaum calls her generally the third-best point guard in the class, after Kaleena Smith and Banks. Saturday's pledge is a verbal commitment, and signing is still ahead.
