Kyrie Irving said Friday he has no physical restrictions after a torn left ACL that kept him off the floor for 19 months.
Nineteen months after the March 3, 2025 tear against Sacramento at American Airlines Center, Irving is 34 and a nine-time All-Star walking into Dusty May's first Mavericks camp cleared, with the opener still set for Oct. 21 at Houston.
That clearance is the first real pivot for a franchise that finished 26-56 last season, Dallas' worst mark in eight years. Irving made his ninth All-Star team weeks before the injury, then averaged 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 1.3 steals in 50 games on 47.3 percent shooting and 40.1 percent from three in 36.1 minutes. Surgery followed on March 26, 2025. On Feb. 18, 2026, Dallas ruled him out for the entire 2025-26 season. Media day Friday was the first time he had addressed reporters since the tear. Masai Ujiri put the health check in plain language. Irving is "right there."
Camp still has to invent the tape. May is the first coach to jump straight from a college head job to an NBA bench since John Beilein left Michigan for Cleveland in 2019, and May just won an NCAA title at Michigan last season. He has never run an NBA install with Kyrie Irving on the floor for live five-on-five. Every set May wants to hang on Irving's handle, every late-clock isolation, and every help-side tag Flagg has to learn while Kyrie draws two gets its first live rep in camp. Those reps start Saturday, when May runs his first practice. May already said he expects to coach Irving only when he can add value. That line carries more weight because May and Irving have no shared history to lean on.
The Flagg piece is the one every West scout will rewind. Cooper Flagg was the unanimous 2025-26 Rookie of the Year. He and Irving spent summer workouts together building the connection Flagg said he is excited to take into games. Ujiri called the Kyrie-Cooper combination with May the uniqueness he is curious to see. On the floor that curiosity looks like Irving as the primary creator who can freeze a tag with a hesitation dribble and Flagg as the cutter and weak-side threat who punishes the help Irving creates. Dallas spent a full season without that two-man game. The lottery year was a holding pattern around a star who could not play. Now the holding pattern ends, and the question shifts from whether Irving can lace up to whether May can install enough of that two-man read before Houston on Oct. 21.
Irving already flagged the load management that will follow even with no restrictions. He expects ongoing conversations with the medical staff about back-to-backs, honesty day to day, and fluid communication with a staff full of new faces. A 34-year-old entering year 16 is telling you the minutes after a 19-month ACL layoff will be negotiated in real time. For May, that means the starting five on night one of a back-to-back may look different from night two, and the second unit has to be ready to hold creation when Irving sits. The Macao preseason against Houston on Oct. 9 and Oct. 11, then home dates against New Orleans on Oct. 14 and Atlanta on Oct. 16, become the first public stress tests of that plan before the opener and the Oct. 24 home tip against the Spurs.
Leadership showed up before camp. Irving organized a teammate minicamp at PLYRS UNTD in Los Angeles. Ujiri said every player attended for three or four days. That matters for a roster that absorbed a front-office reset in May and a coaching reset in June. The minicamp gave Irving live runs against All-Star and All-Defensive peers after a year and a half away, and it gave Flagg and the rest of the young core reps with the guard who is supposed to run the show. Dallas does not get those reps back if camp opens with Irving limited. Friday's message was that camp does not have to.
The West will not wait for a soft landing. With a new president, a first-year NBA head coach, a unanimous Rookie of the Year, and a nine-time All-Star returning from 19 months off, the product to sell in October is creation that was missing for an entire season. Irving's 24.7 points and 40.1 percent from three before the tear set the baseline. The real question is whether that creation and Flagg's gravity can coexist in May's early sets without the medical staff yanking the minutes every second night.
