Niagara County Supreme Court Justice Frank A. Sedita III granted Roddy Gayle Jr. a preliminary injunction Thursday in Niagara Falls, clearing the Michigan guard to play a fifth college season while his lawsuit against the NCAA moves forward.

Gayle gets the 2026-27 year on the active roster: a 6-5 wing who averaged 7.3 points in 21 minutes off the bench for the national champions and is projected to start. The order is not a temporary restraining order. It stays in place while the case proceeds, a formal filing is due in the next 30 days, and the NCAA is expected to appeal.

The ruling lands in a backcourt that already lost its five-star freshman. Brandon McCoy Jr. is out for 2026-27 after a right ACL in Montenegro. Dusty May left for the Dallas Mavericks 11 weeks after cutting down the nets. Mike Boynton has the job on a two-year deal. Gayle cannot reprint McCoy's European-tour steals, but he puts a title-tested wing back in the rotation before tipoff, which is the depth chart Boynton has to open camp with.

The tape Gayle already owns is why Thursday moves the floor. Michigan beat UConn 69-63 on April 6 for the program's first national title since 1989 and finished 37-3, a program record for wins. Across the first four NCAA Tournament games, Gayle averaged 10.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks. He played 146 career games with 72 starts and scored 1,288 points across two seasons at Ohio State and two at Michigan. Last season he appeared in 39 games with one start, adding 3.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists at 21.1 minutes a night, eleven double-figure scoring games, and 20 blocks. Four of his two-block nights came in the postseason, including the title game against UConn. That is a wing who already closed Big Ten and March possessions, switched onto bigger bodies, and stayed on the floor in the minutes that decided a championship.

Watch how the minutes change without him. Elliot Cadeau still runs the show. Trey McKenney still carries scoring on the wing. The third long defender who can pick up full court or sit in a gap on the nail is the empty seat McCoy left. Gayle's 2025-26 role was the bench answer to that problem: multi-position defense, enough scoring to punish a help rotation, and enough size at 6-5 to survive a switch. CBS Sports projects him starting off the ball next to Cadeau and McKenney, with Tennessee transfer JP Estrella and Cincinnati transfer Moustapha Thiam up front. That is one outlet's lineup sketch, not a Boynton depth-chart release. Camp still opens with a concrete choice: without Gayle, those wing minutes lean on shorter title resumes; with him, Michigan keeps a 23-year-old who already guarded multiple spots on a title run and knows the Big Ten scouting report from the inside.

Title defense basketball is about the help you do not have to teach in October. Gayle already logged 25 games of 20-plus minutes last season and a 30-minute night against Arizona in the Final Four. He is not a portal passenger learning Cadeau's pace on the fly. He is the wing who was already in the film room when Michigan went 10-0 on the Big Ten road and cut down the nets in April. Boynton's first November as the name on the door needs that kind of memory more than another empty scholarship.

Summer League tried to write him out of college. Gayle appeared in two games with the Detroit Pistons, took a $1,700 stipend, hurt his ankle, and never signed a professional contract. He returned to Ann Arbor for treatment. His filing argues the NCAA's age-based eligibility change, adopted in June, carved out the high-school class of 2022 that enrolled immediately and played four straight seasons. Sedita heard the case in Gayle's hometown. A temporary restraining order on Sept. 2 opened the path. Thursday's preliminary injunction is the step that keeps him practicing and listed while the fight continues. Kenny Noland, the former Columbia guard, has also been cleared into the same room. Continuity is scarce after May's exit and the portal window that followed the coaching change. Gayle is the continuity Michigan can actually put on the floor in November.

The case is not finished. A formal order is still due inside 30 days, and an NCAA appeal can still rewrite the calendar. Until then, the confirmed decision is the one Sedita already made public: preliminary injunction, fifth year available for 2026-27, reigning national champion backcourt restocked with the wing who helped cut the nets in April.
