Stephen Curry Takes $20M Less on His $116M Warriors Extension
Two years, $116 million, player option in 2028-29. About $20 million under the max across both years, with roughly $10 million of it freed on the 2027-28 cap sheet.

Stephen Curry agreed Friday night to a two-year, $116 million contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, ESPN's Shams Charania reported, with a player option for the 2028-29 season.
Curry was eligible for up to $136.7 million over those two years and signed for about $20 million less, with a first-year salary of $55.7 million, about $10 million under what a max would have paid in 2027-28.
The 38-year-old has never been a free agent and was never going to become one. He said so all month, to anyone holding a microphone. The only open questions were length and money, and he answered both in the way that helps the roster more than the bank account. The max was sitting right there on the table. He picked the version that hands Mike Dunleavy room to work.
The calendar first. Curry plays 2026-27 on the final year of his current deal, about $62.6 million. The extension covers 2027-28 and 2028-29, his 19th and 20th seasons in one jersey, with the last one on his own terms through the player option. The NBA's Over-38 rule held him to two years in the first place, so this is the full length the league allowed. He locked in the finish line and kept a door open on the final lap.
The money is where the choice shows. Before Friday, Golden State projected to clear more than $100 million in cap room next summer, with Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Draymond Green among the expiring deals. ESPN had estimated a max extension would shrink that to around $45 million. Curry came in under the max, and the roughly $10 million he left off the 2027-28 number comes back as room the front office can put in front of a free agent or use to absorb salary in a trade next July. ESPN's cap read on Friday night was blunt about it, too. The savings give Golden State significant spending power next summer.
That lines up with what Curry kept saying out loud. "I want to have an opportunity to have some flexibility because we haven't had that in years past," he told ESPN this week. He also listed "the absolute desperation to win" among the things he was balancing. For years the Warriors built around a veteran core without real cap room to chase anyone big. This contract is Curry paying to change that.
There is a floor-side cost, and it deserves an honest look. Curry played 43 games last season because of a knee issue. He still averaged 26.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists in those games, an All-Star line at any age, but the 2026-27 roster opens camp without its second star. Butler, 37, is rehabbing a torn ACL and is expected to be limited to individual work when practice starts. The extension does very little for this October. It is built for next July.
Curry is betting on two windows at once. Window one is this season, with Green, Steve Kerr, a healthier Curry, and whatever Butler gives them after the ACL. Window two is the 2027 summer, when the Warriors finally get to shop with real space instead of salary-matching spare parts. Both windows keep the same franchise player, the shooter who bends every coverage the second he crosses half court.
The room has obvious targets. Golden State needs a second creator who can run pick-and-roll when Curry sits, so the offense has a second engine in those minutes. It needs a big who can switch without giving up the glass. It could use a younger wing who takes the other team's best scorer for 35 minutes, so Curry and Green are not burning legs on that matchup in April. Players like that do not come cheap, and they rarely pick a team with no space and a pile of expirings. An extra $10 million in room can be the gap between window shopping and a signed offer.
He did not have to do this now. Curry had until June 30, 2027 to extend, and waiting would have let the front office map the free-agent market first. He signed before Monday's media day instead, which pulls the contract question out of every Hawaii practice report and every road-trip scrum between now and April. Golden State opens Oct. 21 against the Lakers in Los Angeles. Nobody will be asking him about his next deal that night.
The Warriors have their answer now, a real number to plan around, and a star who priced himself under the max with a ring as the stated reason. What is still unknown is whether Dunleavy turns that room into the player who makes year 20 worth playing. Sources
