Victor Wembanyama scored a career-high 52 points, grabbed a career-high 24 rebounds and blocked eight shots as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks 112-111 on Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center, per the NBA.com box score. He made the free throw that put San Antonio ahead for good with 24.2 seconds left, and Kyrie Irving's contested turnaround with three seconds remaining missed, per Field Level Media and the Associated Press.

San Antonio is 6-2 and has won six straight after opening 0-2. Wembanyama was plus-23 in 34:04. The Spurs were minus-22 in the minutes he sat, per ESPN and the AP.

A half that had not been logged before

Wembanyama had 29 points, 15 rebounds and five blocks in the first half, and San Antonio led 68-51. That made him the first player since the NBA's play-by-play era began in 1996-97 with at least 25 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a half, per the AP via TSN. ESPN's Michael C. Wright wrote that he is the first player on record with that half line, period.

Fifteen of those 29 points came at the line. He made all 15 free throws before the break, tying James Harden in 2019 for the most without a miss in a first half since free-throw tracking in that window began in 1997-98, per ESPN. He scored 10 of San Antonio's first 12 points and closed the first quarter with 15 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist, per the AP.

Over 13 seconds of one possession in the second quarter, he blocked Cooper Flagg, P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford in sequence. De'Aaron Fox took the rebound off the third swat with 3:38 left in the half, per ESPN. Dallas shot 2 of 13 when Wembanyama contested in the first half, from an average of 5.5 feet, also per ESPN.

The 50-20 club, and the one-point version of it

Wembanyama finished 16 of 28 from the field, 1 of 8 from three and 19 of 23 from the line, with nine offensive rebounds, two assists, two steals and one turnover, per NBA.com. Coach Mitch Johnson noted that excluding threes he was 15 of 20 inside, per ESPN.

He became the first player with at least 50 and 20 in a one-point win since Wilt Chamberlain in 1964, and only the third player in NBA history with that combination, joining Chamberlain and Elgin Baylor, per ESPN. He also joined Bob McAdoo (1974) as the second player since blocks became official with at least 50 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks in a game. Eight blocks are the most in a 50-point game since blocks became official in 1973-74, per ESPN.

He is 22. He scored 50 against Washington in November 2024. That makes him the fifth player with multiple 50-point games at age 22 or younger, per ESPN. NBA.com's Starting 5 adds that a 50/20/8 line is unprecedented since blocks were first recorded in 1973-74, and that he did it in 34 minutes.

The minutes without him almost erased it

Dallas cut a 19-point Spurs lead early in the third and took a 103-100 lead on Washington's three with 5:38 left, per Field Level Media. Naji Marshall tied it at 111 with a three from beyond the arc with 1:41 left. Wembanyama's free throw with 24.2 seconds left made it 112-111. Irving missed the last look.

When Wembanyama left three minutes into the second quarter, Dallas ran off 12-1 and cut the lead to 49-48, per the AP. He rolled his right ankle with 9:11 left and sat with San Antonio up 94-87. Flagg's alley-oop made it 100-99 with 6:05 left. Wembanyama checked back in and scored 10 in the close, per ESPN.

Dylan Harper called him Superman after the ankle play. Wembanyama told ESPN he was feeling fine and that the physical stretch late was the part that stood out. He also said he has been sick and felt like he got his legs back.

Harper finished with 21 points. Stephon Castle had 17 and 10. Fox scored 10. Irving led Dallas with 29. Marshall had 22 off the bench. Washington had 21 and 10. Flagg had 19 and 10, per NBA.com.

San Antonio outscored Dallas 87-64 with Wembanyama on the floor and gave 22 points of margin back when he sat, per ESPN. The next games on the schedule are Friday: Spurs at Sacramento, Mavericks hosting Utah, per the AP.
