The Boston Celtics are converting Devin Carter's Exhibit 10 camp contract into a two-way deal, league sources told HoopsHype on Saturday morning. The No. 13 pick in the 2024 draft will make $678,882 this season and can play in up to 50 of Boston's 82 regular season games.
Three teams, three prices
Carter has been priced three times in four months. Sacramento attached a 2033 second-round pick to move him to Atlanta in June, a deal Hoops Rumors says was made to get the Kings under the tax line. The Hawks waived him in September and still owe his fully guaranteed $5,158,080 for this season. Boston had a two-way slot open next to Amari Williams and Dillon Mitchell, so no roster move is needed.
Carter played 74 games over two seasons in Sacramento, averaging 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes while shooting .401 from the field and .274 from three. Shoulder surgery pushed his debut to January 2025. Last season he averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes over 38 games, per HoopsHype's Michael Scotto.
Debut in Cleveland
An illness kept Carter out of the Oct. 10 exhibition against Philadelphia, CBS Sports and RotoWire reported, and it has limited his preseason minutes. In his Celtics debut on Oct. 8 at Cleveland, he had 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 25 minutes, and Boston was plus-22 with him on the floor.
Boston.com's game recap describes his first basket as a heavily contested dunk in transition and two first-half drives that ended in layups through contact. He also picked off a Cleveland pass to stop a transition chance and found Luka Garza for an open three.
Carter was the Big East Player of the Year at Providence in 2023-24, averaging 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists.
How the two-way works
The Celtics are expected to carry an open standard roster spot into the regular season, Keith Smith reported. A two-way player can be active for up to 50 NBA regular season games. Boston's G League affiliate is the Maine Celtics. Two-way players are ineligible for the playoffs unless their team converts them to a standard contract by the last day of the regular season.
Sacramento paid a second-round pick to move him. Atlanta still owes him $5.16 million. Boston will pay him $678,882.
