Alanna Smith's 12-Minute Exit Ends Her World Cup

Alanna Smith is out for the rest of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup after a 12-minute injury scare.

Basketball Australia withdrew Alanna Smith from the rest of the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup on Wednesday.

Smith had 10 points and 8 rebounds in 12 minutes against Puerto Rico on Sep. 4 before a contested defensive rebound ended her night, and Dallas still has no return date before the Wings tip again Sep. 17.

She limped off before the half got settled. Four-of-five from the field. Three offensive boards. One steal. One block. Plus-8 in a green and gold stretch that looked like the Co-Defensive Player of the Year Dallas paid for. Then the lower leg. She talked to the physio, sat the rest in a hoodie, and Australia still closed Puerto Rico 70-54. FIBA locks the twelve-player roster at the technical meeting. No replacement. The Opals play the rest of Berlin with eleven healthy bodies and no Whitcomb either.

Sandy Brondello’s first line was short: no status report, and she had played great in those twelve minutes. The early tag was precautionary lower-leg tightness. Rest and testing followed. The Wednesday decision was withdrawal so she can rehab. No timetable for Dallas. The Wings tip again Sep. 17.

That is the possession that matters for Arlington. Dallas signed Smith in April on a three-year, $3.75 million deal after Minnesota’s 2025: 9.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.9 blocks in 42 starts and a Co-DPOY share. Curt Miller called her the top free-agency target because she can switch coverages and shrink the paint next to Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale. The first Wings chapter has already chewed minutes. Nasal fracture in preseason. Concussion protocol in June. A right-leg sit in July. Azzi Fudd, the No. 1 pick, is already done for the year after a right knee that ended a 13.1-point rookie line across 30 games. Jessica Shepard and Aziaha James have missed time too. A playoff berth is locked. The seed and the closeout defense still need the forward who just put 10 and 8 on the board in twelve World Cup minutes.

Count the steps on that rebound. She was winning the glass and the contest at the same time. That is the help the Wings bought. Berlin cannot swap her. Dallas has eight calendar days before the regular-season clock starts again and no public medical line on whether the lower leg clears by then. Australia keeps chasing gold without the frontcourt piece that graded 16 efficiency on one night. The Wings keep chasing a seed with Bueckers still overseas and the co-DPOY on rehab.

Twelve minutes. Ten and eight. The tournament is over for her. Sep. 17 is the next date that counts in Dallas.
