Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller has agreed to a five-year, $209 million rookie-scale contract extension, his representatives AJ Vaynerchuk and Joey Middleton of VaynerSports told ESPN's Shams Charania on Monday. Charania posted the news at 4:58 p.m. ET, about an hour before the 6 p.m. ET deadline for the 2023 draft class.

Without a deal, Miller would have played 2026-27 on his rookie contract and become a restricted free agent next summer, Yahoo Sports noted.

The number

The Hornets drafted Miller No. 2 overall in 2023. Before Monday, Marc Stein and Jake Fischer had reported that Charlotte was working toward an offer at or above the five-year, $208 million deal Amen Thompson signed with Houston, per WhyNBA. A full five-year maximum would have run to roughly $275 million, WhyNBA reported. By The Dyme's math, the final figure lands $1 million above Thompson's.

His numbers

Miller averaged 20.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season and shot 38.3% from three in 65 regular-season games, according to ESPN and WhyNBA. The season before, he appeared in just 27 games.

ESPN reported that Charlotte went 41-24 with Miller available last season and 3-14 without him. He missed time early in the year with a shoulder injury. He had surgery in May to stabilize that shoulder, has fully recovered, and has played in the preseason.

The Hornets reached the play-in last season and lost in the second play-in game. Miller and Kon Knueppel, then a rookie, led the second-half run, per ESPN.

A bigger role

Miller turns 24 next month and enters his fourth NBA season. Charlotte traded away LaMelo Ball and Miles Bridges, ESPN reported, and Miller steps into a bigger role this season.

The Hornets open the season at Brooklyn on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. ET.
