Cade Tyson's 19.6 Is Back in Minnesota Practice

Cade Tyson is back in Minnesota practice.

Last season he averaged 19.6 points and 36.7 minutes, scored 628 points, and took 175 free throws for the Gophers while the courts still decide whether the class of 2022 gets a fifth year.

Belmont for two seasons. One year at North Carolina. One year in Minneapolis that put him on All-Big Ten honorable mention and NABC Second Team All-District. The university said Tuesday he has enrolled for fall classes and will practice with the team while he waits on eligibility clearance. Coach Niko Medved's line was short and plain: the program is glad to have him around the facility through the process.

The number that travels is 19.6. That is 21st in Minnesota single-season scoring average. The 628 points sit third in school history for a single season. The 175 free throws made also sit third all-time for one Gopher year. Field goals were 191-of-382. Minutes were 36.7 a night. Those are the possessions a Big Ten offense leans on when the shot clock is ugly and somebody still has to walk into a midrange or step into a three.

Pause it on the Texas Southern night. Career-high 38. Eight threes, tying the school record. Eleven-of-nineteen from the field. That tape is why the roster math without him feels different in October. Exhibition is Oct. 15 against Omaha. Regular season opens Nov. 2 against North Dakota. Medved can build the offense either way. With Tyson cleared, the create button sits on a 6-foot-7 wing who already carried 36.7 minutes. Without him, those touches have to move to somebody who has not posted 628 in a maroon jersey yet.

Career sheet across Belmont, North Carolina, and Minnesota: 1,621 points, 213 made threes, 528 rebounds in 124 games. Double figures 82 times. Missouri Valley Freshman of the Year at Belmont. Second in the country in three-point percentage as a sophomore at 46.5 percent. The Minnesota chapter was the heaviest usage of the four. That is the version the Gophers want back if the injunction fight lands their way.

The legal track is separate from the gym. Players from the high school class of 2022 won a court order for another season after the NCAA's June eligibility model left them out of a five-years-in-five-years frame. A federal appeals court later stayed that injunction. Tyson is practicing anyway. Enrollment is done. The clearance is not. Say the status like the school said it. He intends to play, and the paper is still moving.

Minnesota put 19.6 and 36.7 on him last year. He is in the building again. Tip is still eight weeks out. The courts will decide whether that number gets a sequel in the same gym.
