Cason Wallace agreed to a five-year, $139 million rookie-scale extension with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday night, his agents at Excel Sports Management told ESPN's Shams Charania. By The Dyme's math, the deal averages $27.8 million a season. It lands one day before the Monday 5 p.m. Central deadline and keeps the NBA's steals leader out of restricted free agency next summer.
Per Shams, the Thunder now have their whole starting five under contract for several years. The new money starts in 2027-28.
Where the number landed
Talks opened in the $25 million range, per Marc Stein and Jake Fischer on Oct. 11. ESPN's Bobby Marks had proposed five years and $145 million, starting at $25 million and climbing to $33 million. By The Dyme's math, Wallace came in $6 million under that total and $18.5 million short of Keyonte George's five-year, $157.5 million deal in Utah, the comp Stein said Wallace's camp was measuring against.
The yearly breakdown hasn't been reported yet. The average sits between the two numbers Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints framed as Wallace's range, Dyson Daniels at $25 million a year and Ausar Thompson at about $31 million. One league source had told Siegel that multiple teams would offer Wallace $30 million a year or more in restricted free agency.
Bobby Marks shared a player value model from Jay Kakani right after the news broke. It projects Wallace's value at about $26.9 million a year, ranks him 61st of 394 rated players, and lists his current salary at $7.4 million. Marks wrote that most of the recent extensions have lined up with the model. By The Dyme's math, the average lands about $900,000 above the projection.
What OKC is paying for
Wallace led the league in total steals and deflections last season and has ranked third in steals per game in each of the last two seasons, per ESPN Research.
The rest of the defensive resume came last season. Wallace made All-Defense for the first time, finished seventh in Defensive Player of the Year voting, and joined Daniels, Derrick White, Andrew Nembhard and Amen Thompson as the only guards to win Defensive Player of the Month over the past two seasons, per Marks. The same model card gives him +1.35 for on-ball defense and +2.63 in defensive EPM, his two highest grades.
The weakest grade on that card is scoring efficiency at -0.60. His regular-season three-point percentage has gone 41.9, 35.6 and 35.1 over three seasons on 3.7 attempts a game last year, per Basketball-Reference, and he scored 8.6 points a night. The playoff numbers moved. He shot 48.4% from three across 15 games and scored 17 in Game 7 of the West finals with Jalen Williams and Ajay Mitchell out. San Antonio still won that game and the series.
The Dort trade and the tax bill
Sam Presti tied the July 19 trade that sent Lu Dort to Atlanta directly to Wallace. "I think the greatest sign of respect we could have shown Cason is moving Lu [Dort] in that trade," Presti said before training camp. He said the message to Wallace was, "We believe in you as a player."
Wallace started 58 of his 77 games last season with Dort still on the roster. Hoops Rumors expects him to take over the starting shooting guard spot Dort left behind. Oklahoma City also traded Aaron Wiggins to Atlanta and Isaiah Joe to Detroit in deals made official July 6, per NBA.com, and The Dyme laid out the apron problem on Oct. 13. Per Marks, the Thunder sat $1.9 million over the second apron with year one of Gilgeous-Alexander's supermax starting, and he estimated a deal starting at $25 million would add about $150 million in luxury tax over its life.
The 22-year-old guard who led the league in steals gets paid like a starter for the first time.
