Dan Hurley's New 6-Year Deal Keeps UConn's 199-75 Coach in Storrs Through 2032

UConn gave Dan Hurley a new six-year contract through 2032 under the existing terms, adding two years to the four left on his 2024 deal.

Jon Rothstein first reported the extension, per On3, and UConn announced Friday that Dan Hurley signed a new six-year contract running through 2032, adding two years to the four he had left on the deal he signed in 2024. The school said the new contract keeps the existing terms, so the change is length, with Hurley 199-75 in eight seasons and three national title games in the last four years.

Two years, same money

The 2024 contract was a six-year, $50 million deal, per the New Haven Register, and the paper reports Hurley should keep earning the same annual salary on the new one. UConn's release says "under the existing terms" and gives no figures.

That makes this a clock reset. The school moved the end date from 2030 to 2032 and left the pay alone. Hurley already sits second in salary among public-school men's coaches behind Bill Self, per the Register's citation of USA Today.

Athletic director David Benedict tied it to the moment in the release: "In this chaotic era of college sports, it has never been more important to maintain continuity."

The age-60 line

Hurley turns 54 in January. He has said often that he doesn't plan to still be coaching at 60, per the Register. The new deal runs out with him at 59.

The last time Hurley's future was a live question, the Lakers were the team circling, per On3. He stayed and signed the 2024 deal. This extension lands with no outside suitor in the news.

What the record says

UConn's release lists:

  • 126-28 since 2022-23.
  • 2023 and 2024 national titles, making him the first coach in program history to win back-to-back, plus a third title game in 2026 against Michigan.
  • 20-6 in the NCAA Tournament, tied with six other coaches for the best start to a career in tournament history.
  • 11-1 in the Sweet 16 or later, the best mark of any coach in tournament history, per UConn.
  • 86-30 in Big East regular-season play since UConn rejoined the league for 2020-21.

That splits to 9-5 before the Sweet 16 and 11-1 from there, by our count. UConn's release puts his .769 tournament winning percentage second all-time behind John Wooden's .825.

Twelve Hurley players have reached the NBA from Storrs, seven of them first-round picks and four in the lottery, per the school.

The season ahead

UConn opens Monday, Nov. 2 against Gardner-Webb, and On3 lists the Huskies as a top-five team and the preseason Big East favorite. Silas Demary Jr., the Big East Preseason Player of the Year, and Braylon Mullins made the 20-man NABC Player of the Year watch list this week, and UConn is one of three schools with two names on it, along with Duke and Florida.
