Second man on the glass before the first one landed. That is the whole shot with Angel Reese. Not the 31 in Phoenix. The miss, then the board.

Same night she took the season mark too: 458, seven more than A’ja Wilson’s 451 from 2024. Two records. One cold shooting night. Eleven points. The 27th double-double of the year, league-leading, on a basket with 13.9 seconds left.

If you hoop, you already know the difference between a scoring heater and a job. Saturday in Phoenix was 31 and 14 and a playoff ticket. That was the finish. Monday in L.A. was 11 points and a record that had been waiting 23 years. The jumper did not show up. The work did. You do not accidentally get 26. You live in the paint until the other team is tired of boxing you out.
Allisha Gray had 20. Rhyne Howard had 18 and passed 3,000 for her career. Gray after the game: she is just in awe watching her rebound. That is a teammate talking about a talent, not a box score. Do not turn 26 into a personality graphic. Holdsclaw’s 24 was a Hall of Fame night. Wilson’s 451 was a title-team season. Reese passed both with the shot not falling. That is the take. The 31 made the ticket. The 26 told you what the series will actually look like. You can live with a cold jumper if the extra possession never stops.
Phoenix was the closer. Los Angeles was the tax. You send a double, Howard and Gray make you pay. You play her straight, she eats the miss. You switch a guard onto her late, she still gets the rebound because she started the second jump while you were watching the ball. The WNBA account posted 26 like it was a graphic. It is not a graphic. It is a player who decided the record night would be the one where she could not shoot.
Six games left. The season number is already past Wilson and it will move again. The single-game number is the one that does not come back. 26. Holdsclaw 24. 2003 to Monday. Same body that dropped 31 in a clinch two nights earlier, now getting 11 and still breaking the league. That is not a contradiction. That is the job description.
If you needed the Dream to prove they were more than a Saturday explosion, Monday is the tape. Road win. Cold shooting from the star. Record on the glass anyway. Gray 20. Howard 18. Ogwumike doing her night on the other bench and still walking out down seven. Four straight on the road is a team that is not waiting for a home crowd to decide who they are.
The 31 will get the clip. The 26 should get the argument. Two records in one night, jumper gone, extra jump still there. That is Angel Reese. That is the paint. That is what a playoff frontcourt actually looks like when the shot is not the story.
