Jalen Suggs has a mild bone bruise in his right knee and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, ESPN's Shams Charania reported Monday afternoon, with no other major structural damage. By our count of the schedule, Orlando plays six games before that two-week mark, a window that also falls inside Banchero's four-to-six-week timetable.

The scare was worse than the diagnosis. Suggs went up for a breakaway layup with 2:09 left in Sunday's 111-102 win at Madison Square Garden, his right knee buckled with nobody near him, and he needed help to reach the locker room, per ESPN.

The window, game by game

Two weeks from Monday lands on Nov. 9. Per the Basketball Reference schedule, the Magic play twice at Toronto (Oct. 28, then an NBA Cup game Oct. 30), host Boston on Nov. 1 and Washington on Nov. 2, then open a West trip at Phoenix on Nov. 5 and Golden State on Nov. 7. The trip keeps going to Sacramento on Nov. 10 and Utah on Nov. 11.

Banchero's low-grade high ankle sprain from Friday's loss to Minnesota came with a four-to-six-week timetable. That stretch covers every one of those six games. Orlando is 1-2.

What Orlando loses on the floor

Suggs has not been sharp on offense through three games. Per Basketball Reference, he is averaging 8.0 points and 5.7 assists in 33.3 minutes on 35.7 percent shooting, and he has made 1 of 9 threes. The scoring is not the loss.

The loss is the defensive assignment nobody else on the roster takes. Suggs made the All-Defensive Second Team in 2023-24 and finished 10th in Defensive Player of the Year voting. Last season he averaged 1.8 steals across 57 games, and he is at 2.0 a night this year.

There is also the history. Suggs played 35 games in 2024-25 and 57 last season, which is the 92 games over two years that ESPN noted Sunday night. On Jan. 3 it was a Grade 1 MCL contusion in this same right knee, per Hoops Rumors. A mild bruise with no structural damage is good news, and it is still the second time in 2026 that the right knee has pulled him off the floor.

Who takes the ball

Sunday answered part of this already. Franz Wagner scored 21 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter at the Garden, with a career-high 13 rebounds and nine assists, per the Magic's own game notes. Per that same team note, teammates are shooting 50 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from three on passes from Wagner this season.

That is a forward running the offense, which is exactly what Orlando needs with both Banchero and Suggs out.

Anthony Black is the other answer, and the one that matters more for the defense. Black missed the first two games with an ankle sprain, then put up 18 points and five assists on 5-of-7 from three. Orlando outscored New York by 21 with him on the floor, per the team. Over the last two seasons, the Magic went 56-9 when Black finished with a positive plus-minus, per the same note.

Orlando's three-point share

Sean Sweeney has changed how Orlando shoots. Per the team, 47.1 percent of their shots have come from three this season, third-highest in the league, up from 38.7 percent and 24th last season. On Sunday, 22 of their 42 threes came off kickouts, and they made 12 of them.

The numbers say Orlando has room to absorb it on defense and less room on offense. Through three games, per Basketball Reference, the Magic have a 112.5 defensive rating (14th) and a 106.0 offensive rating (26th). Losing Suggs hurts the end where they are already middle of the pack. Losing Banchero hurts the end where they are already near the bottom.

What to watch

Toronto on Wednesday is the first test of the Black-in-the-lineup version. The second Raptors game counts in the NBA Cup group standings, and Boston comes to Orlando the following Sunday.

The Magic have not given a return date for either player.
