Otega Oweh had surgery Wednesday to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon and will miss the entire 2026-27 season, the Oklahoma City Thunder announced Wednesday night. The No. 41 pick in June gets zero rookie games after four preseason appearances, and the Thunder now have to decide whether a two-way slot sits with him for a full year of rehab.

The overtime play

Oklahoma City beat Indiana 114-112 in overtime Tuesday at Paycom Center, and Oweh did not finish it. Early in the extra period he planted his right foot on defense, tried to push off and went down, per The Oklahoman. Nobody touched him. He grabbed the back of his right ankle, stayed down, and needed help to get to the locker room because he could not put weight on the foot.

The procedure came early Wednesday in New York. Dr. Martin O'Malley performed it at the Hospital for Special Surgery with Thunder medical staff in the room, per the team. The release gave a season and no month count: "Oweh will miss the remainder of the 2026–27 season. Further updates will be provided as appropriate."

Mark Daigneault had little to add after the game. "It's really tough," he said. "Really tough. It's tough for him."

Five games of pro basketball

Count every game Oweh has played since the draft and you get five. He left the first game of Summer League with a left foot injury and sat the Thunder's other seven games there, per The Oklahoman. Then came four preseason games and 94 minutes, per NBA.com's game log.

He averaged 6.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in 23.4 minutes, per Hoops Rumors. He went 0-for-5 from three and 3-of-8 at the line, per NBA.com. His best night was Monday in Atlanta, a start where he played 35 minutes and finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds (four offensive), two steals and a block. A night later he came off the bench against Indiana and had eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, 2-of-2 at the line, in 15 minutes before the overtime exit. He was plus-6.

The NBA.com draft profile, written by RotoWire, called him a downhill slasher who draws fouls, a disruptive on-ball defender who can guard three positions, and a shooter whose three "has room to grow." Daigneault said almost the same thing days before the injury. "Otega has all of the physical tools. He has great physical athleticism, strength and size. He's a prototype wing defender. He's got to get the fundamental base down, as all of those guys do."

Two-way math

Oweh holds one of Oklahoma City's three two-way slots. Josh Dix and Brooks Barnhizer have the other two. Hoops Rumors spelled out the stake. If the Thunder keep Oweh on that deal for the full season, he becomes eligible for restricted free agency next summer, which would give Oklahoma City matching rights on a player who has not taken a regular-season NBA possession.

On the floor, NBA.com's roster lists Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Cason Wallace, Alex Caruso, Ajay Mitchell, Jared McCain and Nikola Topic among a long run of guards, plus Barnhizer and Dix on the other two-ways.

The OKC pattern

This is the third straight draft class where an Oklahoma City rookie loses his first season to a major injury, per Hoops Rumors. Nikola Topic tore his ACL and sat out 2024-25. Thomas Sorber tore his ACL and sat out 2025-26. Both are on the NBA.com roster page now, Topic wearing No. 44 and Sorber No. 12.

Oweh came to Oklahoma City in a trade with Miami, which made the 41st pick, per NBA.com. Barnhizer, his fellow two-way, talked about him Tuesday before anyone knew the diagnosis. "With the kind of kid Otega is, regardless of what it is, he's going to be OK," Barnhizer said. "He's such a lively person. Whenever he walks into the room, he puts a smile on everybody's face."

Eight days, two right Achilles

Oweh is the second player in eight days to lose 2026-27 to a right Achilles in a preseason game. Philadelphia's Ariel Hukporti tore his on Oct. 5, pushing off his right leg to contest a Karl-Anthony Towns three in the preseason opener. Both were noncontact plays. The Dyme covered Hukporti's injury and the Sixers' cap squeeze when it happened.

What he brings back

Oweh started at Oklahoma, then transferred to Kentucky and became the program's leading scorer. As a senior he averaged 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals in 32.8 minutes on 46.5% shooting, 33.3% from three and 73.1% at the line, per NBA.com. He made the All-SEC second team in both of his Kentucky seasons and scored a career-high 35 against Santa Clara in the first round of the 2026 NCAA tournament on March 20. His 1,255 points were the most by any player in his first two seasons at Kentucky. His brother is Washington Commanders defensive end Odafe Oweh.

The Thunder play Houston on Thursday and open the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 20, at San Antonio.
