Paolo Banchero landed on his right ankle early in the third quarter Friday night, tangled with teammate Jalen Suggs on a rebound, and the Orlando Magic star has a low-grade right high ankle sprain, ESPN reported Saturday and the Orlando Sentinel confirmed. That diagnosis typically carries a four-to-six-week window. By The Dyme's count of the schedule, that is 13 to 18 games without the best player on a team that is already 0-2.
The Magic have not given a return date. Banchero will keep getting evaluated, and the Sentinel reports he is expected to miss time.
What Friday looked like
Banchero went down crashing the glass with Suggs, grabbed the ankle on the way to the floor and headed to the locker room, per USA Today. He came back. He played through the rest of the third quarter, and then coach Sean Sweeney sat him for the fourth with Orlando down 26. The final was Minnesota 115, Orlando 93, at the Kia Center.
His line in 26 minutes was 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting, six rebounds, five assists and a steal. Postgame, Sweeney said only that the ankle was sore and that Banchero would be evaluated before Sunday's game at the Knicks.
The start he was having
Two games is a tiny sample, and it still looked like a different Banchero. Per Basketball Reference, he averaged 24.5 points and 7.5 assists through two games on 69.6 percent shooting. He took 11.5 shots a game and got to the line 10 times a game.
Compare that with last season. Banchero averaged 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists across 72 games in 2025-26, and he shot 30.5 percent from three. In seven playoff games he bumped that to 26.3 points, 9.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists. The 7.5 assists a night this October would be a career high over a full season by more than two a game.
The games in the window
Four weeks from Friday lands on Nov. 20. Six weeks lands on Dec. 4. By The Dyme's count of the Basketball Reference schedule, the Magic play 13 games from Oct. 25 through Nov. 20 and 18 games through Dec. 2, their last game before a gap that runs to Dec. 12.
Look at who is in that window. The Knicks on the road Sunday, then two at Toronto, the second of them an NBA Cup game. Boston at home Nov. 1, then a four-game West trip from Nov. 5 to Nov. 11 that opens in Phoenix and Golden State. Milwaukee in a Cup game Nov. 13, then at Boston, Philadelphia at home and a Cup game at Brooklyn on Nov. 20. If the high end of the timetable holds, Banchero also misses the Nov. 24 Cup game against Detroit and the Dec. 2 trip to Dallas.
By The Dyme's count, the four-week low end alone covers three NBA Cup games and two against Boston.
The numbers Orlando has to fix without him
The Magic's problem through two games has been the other end of the floor. Per Basketball Reference, Orlando is allowing 123.5 points a game, 25th in the league, with a 118.8 defensive rating that ranks 23rd. The Hawks put 132 on them in the opener. Minnesota led by 26 going into the fourth Friday.
Orlando's offensive rating through two games is 104.9, which ranks 21st. That number came with Banchero shooting near 70 percent. NBC Sports projects Tristan da Silva as the likely starter if Banchero sits Sunday.
Franz Wagner played only 34 games last season, per USA Today, while dealing with calf and ankle injuries, per Sportsnet.
Orlando has been here before
In 2024-25, a torn right oblique held Banchero to 46 games. Orlando went 19-14 without him in the first stretch of that absence, per Yahoo Sports.
The Magic have not given a return date, and Banchero will keep being evaluated, per the Orlando Sentinel.
