What Paige Bueckers' 22 and 11 Mean Now That the Wings Are In

Watch the steal. Midway through the fourth in Arlington, Paige Bueckers takes the ball and finds Arike Ogunbowale for a wide-open three. 84-60. That is the tape. Not a graphic. A steal and a find that told Portland the math was already finished.

Twenty-two and 11. Eight-of-15. Jessica Shepard 21, nine, and six. Dallas 96, Portland 78. The eighth and last ticket. First Wings dance since 2023. First one for Bueckers. Do not file that as a consolation.

If you hoop, you already know what a last seed is supposed to feel like. A sigh. A printout. A "we got in" that sounds like an apology. Tuesday night at a sold-out College Park Center was not that. The Fire never led. Dallas was up 50-37 at the half, then opened the third on a 15-4 tear and sat on a lead that got as big as 26. Visiting Portland walked into somebody else's building and never found the first punch.

All five starters in double figures. That is the sentence under the 22-and-11. Ogunbowale 17. Awak Kuier 12, 12, and five blocks. Alanna Smith 10. Shepard doing the dirty 21-and-9 with six assists of her own. Bueckers, coming off 32 on Sunday, put up her 23rd 20-point game of the year and still had 11 dimes left. She and Ogunbowale each hit three of Dallas's 11 threes. The steal-and-find in the fourth was the period, not the essay.

The last seed is not a consolation graphic. The Wings are 23-16, five games left, and 23 wins is the most this franchise has posted since the 2016 move to Dallas. The club called it a team record. Yahoo called it the Dallas-era high. Same number. Same room. First postseason since 2023, sixth since the relocation. Bueckers had never been in this sentence. She is now.

Portland is 15-23 and out. Expansion year, last night of the race, done. Bridget Carleton and Karlie Samuelson each scored 14. Emily Engstler had 12 and a career-high 15 boards. None of that changes the standing. The Fire are watching. The Wings are not.

The field is set. Minnesota. Golden State. Las Vegas. Atlanta. Indiana. New York. Washington. Dallas. That is the eight. No seed is locked. Minnesota is sitting on the best record in the league and still has to finish the job. The Wings came into Tuesday less than three games out of fifth. Officially they can still land anywhere from second to eighth. First round is best-of-three, higher seed gets Games 1 and 3 if it goes there. Playoffs start Sunday, Sept. 27. The "in" is settled. The "where" is the next fight.

Bueckers after: it means a lot, given what they had to get through, and they do not want to get complacent just because the ticket is punched. That is the right read. Losing seven of nine after the All-Star break is still on the tape. Azzi Fudd is out the rest of the regular season. Jose Fernandez is in year one. None of that is a reason to treat 23-16 like a finished poster. It is a reason the 22-and-11 mattered on the night the last door closed.

Do not turn the 8-seed into a shrug. First ticket since 2023 is a season. First Bueckers postseason is a sentence that did not exist in May. Twenty-three wins is the Dallas-era high with five still to play. The field is the field. The seed is live.

The steal. The find. 84-60. 22 and 11. Shepard's 21-9-6 on the same sheet. 96-78, College Park Center, sold out. Wings in. Fire out. Seed not done. That is Tuesday. Do not overcook it. Do not undersell it either.
