14 and 11: Clark's World Cup Debut Against China
Off the bench in Berlin. Fourteen points. Eleven assists. Zero turnovers. USA 94-61 over China and 7-foot-3 Zhang Ziyu.

Caitlin Clark came off the bench in Berlin and finished with 14 points and 11 assists (zero turnovers) in USA's 94-61 win over China.
That is the most assists by a USA player in a Women's World Cup debut, and the first 10-plus assist game without a turnover in Women's World Cup history.
Zhang Ziyu is 7-foot-3 and 19. She planted under the rim, ate second chances, and forced doubles on the catch. Han Xu at 6-10 joined her in the third. That is the paint problem Kara Lawson named after the game, and it is why the USA night lived on the pass. Clark said the posts got the physical challenge before tip, and Aliyah Boston ate minutes on Zhang. Per FIBA, Clark had four assists in her first four minutes. The young trio of Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese closed the first quarter together with the Americans up 27-14. None of them started. All three were already shaping the game.
China cut it to 33-25 on Zhang's first basket with 6:21 left in the half. Then came the 16-4 run. Jackie Young hit a three-point play. Breanna Stewart scored the last four of the spurt. Halftime was 49-29. China got as close as 53-37 in the third before Clark, Bueckers, and Reese sparked a 17-5 close to the period. Rhyne Howard scored 14. Bueckers scored 14. Young scored 12. Zhang finished with 13 on 9-of-10 free throws. Han went 11 and 10. The final was never in doubt after the half, but the argument of the night was who could move the ball around that frontcourt.

FIBA has the history sheet. Alyssa Thomas held the USA debut assist mark with nine against Belgium in 2022. Clark cleared it with 11. Clark is alone among 10-plus assist games with zero turnovers. She was TCL Player of the Game on 14 points, three threes, and 22 efficiency. USA's World Cup win streak is now 31 games, dating to the 2006 semifinal loss.
The Berlin crowd was with the Americans. Clark signed a ball and posed with a kid in a Fever shirt before the game, the same habit she runs in the WNBA. Next tip is Italy on Sunday in group play. The paint will still be tall. The pass is still the answer.
