Brandon McCoy Jr. Out for 2026-27 After Right ACL

You saw it before the replay did. Midcourt poke, race the other way, slip near the rim in transition then the right knee, the carry-off, and an empty bench seat for the rest of the Montenegro night.

Brandon McCoy Jr. will miss the entire 2026-27 season after a right ACL injury, Michigan coach Mike Boynton Jr. announced Tuesday, Sept. 1.

That is not a minutes tweak. That is the five-star freshman who just put European-tour tape on the board getting erased from a title defense that tips in about two months. Defending national champions. New coach after Dusty May left. And the on-ball disruptor they were counting on is done for the year before the first official tip.

Rewind the opening possession against KK Mega SUPERBET. He poked the ball away near midcourt, stole it clean, and sprinted the other way. Near the basket in transition he slipped, grabbed the right knee, and could not put weight on the right leg. He was carried off. He did not return to the bench. That is the clip. The tour finale in Montenegro ended his freshman season before it started.

Michigan said further updates on surgery and recovery come when they are available. The only calendar that matters Tuesday is the one that says 2026-27 is gone.

What you already watched in Lithuania is why this hole is different from a random freshman redshirt. First two European Tour games: 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals. Debut against the Lithuania National Team — 14 points, five rebounds, four steals. Against the Lithuania National B Team — 15 points, five rebounds. That is not camp vibes. That is a 6-6 wing with a 7-foot wingspan already living in passing lanes against national-team bodies. Boynton had said in the summer he expected a big role — alpha athlete who can pick up full court, three-time gold medalist already. The Lithuania steals were the receipt. Camp can add conditioning. Camp cannot reprint four steals in a debut once the ACL takes the year.

Now look at the backcourt without him. Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney become the floor. Every possession that was supposed to have a third long athlete crashing the nail or chasing over a screen now asks one of those two to cover more ground, or asks a freshman/transfer minute that has not proven it overseas. Unproven depth behind Cadeau and McKenney was already the quiet risk. McCoy was the answer on paper — McDonald's All-American out of Sierra Canyon, five-star headliner of the signing class — and Tuesday turned that answer into a redshirt year.

Title defense basketball is about the help you do not have to teach midseason. McCoy's tape was the steal that starts a transition you do not draw up in a film room. Lose that for a full season and the Wolverines defend the championship with a different shape: more Cadeau creation, more McKenney scoring burden, fewer possessions where a freshman wingspan erases the first pass. Boynton's first year as the name on the door now opens without the piece summer workouts were built around.

Campus-to-pro clock takes a pause too. A five-star who just flashed 14 and 15 on a European trip does not get a 2026-27 résumé. The next evaluation window is rehab, not November Big Ten nights. Michigan will say more when surgery and recovery are ready to share. Until then the only confirmed decision is the one Boynton already made public: right ACL, out for 2026-27.

You do not need a mock draft slot to feel the weight. You need the opening possession in Montenegro and the empty minutes chart in Ann Arbor. Steal. Slip. Carry-off. Season over. Title defense starts without him.
